Paediatric Early Years First Aid 2 day Ofsted approved syllabus (PFAW)
Introduction
Suitable for people working professionally in day nurseries, nursery schools, pre-school environments & Child carers & minders who require an Ofsted qualification. In emergencies, First Aiders can act to prevent situations becoming major issues and along with the knowledge and skills to use first aid equipment, can also limit potential sick leave through prompt action.

Aims

To provide nursery & pre school staff, Child carers & minders with the knowledge & skills to summon help & give safe, prompt & effective emergency aid to a child casualty (both children & babies) in a care environment following an injury or illness using materials to hand and approved first aid equipment. |
Objectives
- State the procedure at emergencies and
- State immediate action and know when and how to get help by calling 999
- Know how to prevent accidents and create a safe environment for children and babies.
- Assessment of a child casualty
- Assess and treat a child & baby that is unconscious
- Place a child, baby and adult in the recovery position
- Artificial Ventilation and CPR techniques for children & babies
- Examine an unconscious casualty
- Assess and treat a choking casualty
- Treatment and control of slight and severe external and internal bleeding
- Assess, treat and comfort a casualty with nosebleeds, grazes &/or larger wounds including penetrating wounds
- Recognise and treat shock in children and babies
- Recognise and treat anaphylactic shock in child
- Care for a child who is ill before collection by parents.
- Recognise and treat head injuries, electric shock and poisoning
- Assessment and treatment of Fractures
- Assess and treat Asthmatic attacks, Epileptic fits, Diabetic emergencies & Sickle Cell Emergencies.
- Identify the causes, recognise and treat cases of burns and eye injuries
- First Aid equipment and record keeping
- Identify recommended contents of a first aid box
- Know what accidents and incidents to record
- State information required within the accident book

Syllabus
DAY 1
- Welcome & Course Admin
- Early Years First Aid What is it?
- Creating a safe environment for children
- Primary Survey of a child casualty (Infant & Baby)
- Initial assessment
- Recovery position (Infant & Baby)
- Artificial Ventilation and CPR techniques(Infant & Baby)
- Assessment of an unconscious casualty (Infant & Baby)
- Choking casualties (Infant & Baby)
- Bleeding (recognition and treatment) To include nosebleeds, grazes, larger wounds & penetration wounds
- Recognition & treatment of medical Shock (Infant & Baby)
DAY 2
- Electric shock
- Burns or scalds
- Fractures including head, neck and back injuries;
- Poisoning;
- Foreign body in eyes, ears or nose including eye injuries
- Bites & stings;
- Extreme heat or cold;
- Diabetic emergency; asthma attack; allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), meningitis and febrile convulsions;
- The role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider (including appropriate contents of a first aid box and recording accidents and incidents);
- Revision of underpinning knowledge and practical skills

This course is for:
Any staff or volunteer workers who require an Early Years childcare First Aid course & are responsible for the care of children &/or babies. Staff completing Level 3 of the National Occupational Standards in Children�s Care CCLD 302. All registered Childminders and pre school playgroup leaders are required to have First Aid training.
Certificate:
A 3 year Certificate of Competence (OfQual recommended) will be awarded on successful completion of the course and assessment.

- Formative Assessment will be ongoing throughout the course by the trainer. On our FAW courses there is a final assessment on the last day conducted by independent assessors.
